2016 Summer Olympics – Rio 2016

So today’s post will have nothing to do about writing…

Anyone that knows me has figured out that I am a huge fan of the Olympics. My family was fairly athletic with each of us involved in several sports throughout the year, we always stopped to watch the Olympics. Summer or Winter games, it doesn’t matter, I will be sitting in front of the television for all seventeen days of competition.

The 2016 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXXI Olympiad are being held in Rio de Janiero, Brazil.

The Opening Ceremonies were a little simpler than they have been in the past but I enjoyed it. The parade of athletes is always enjoyable and the light of the Olympic cauldron is always interesting. The moving sculpture behind the cauldron is beautiful.

The Olympic Oath –

In the name of all the competitors, I promise that we shall take part in these Olympic Games, respecting and abiding by the rules which govern them, committing ourselves to a sport without doping and without drugs, in the true spirit of sportsmanship, for the glory of sport and the honor of our teams.

Getting away

This is pretty much how I spent today.

Our summer vacation was a last minute thing, we barely fit it in before Labor Day.   It’s been a great end to our summer.  I hope everyone had a fun summer, now on to Autumn!

Looking forward

Every summer we take a week long vacation in California, in a normal year, we’d be there this weekend.  This year we had some work related changes and figured it was best to skip our trip.  Sometimes this grown up stuff is a real pain.

It turns out though that we need a little vacation.  A little planning and a couple of emails later and we are all set for a long weekend in Southern California.  One of those days will be spent hanging at the beach, some time in the water and a lot of reading and relaxing.  I cannot wait!

Do you bring books on vacation?  What have you been reading this summer?  What is your favorite format, books or eReader?

There’s a ton of stuff to do first, so I should get to it.  🙂

Summer plans

Since 2009 I have been participating in National Novel Writing Month (NaNo) every year in November.  In fact, my first Sunset Canyon book was started during the November challenge.  If you aren’t familiar with NaNo,  participants are challenged to write 50,000 words of a new novel in 30 days. In recent years, they’ve added Camp NaNo as an extra challenge, it’s a little less strict allowing each writer to choose their own writing goal.

This year they held camp sessions in April and July.  I spent April finishing my November project but I wasn’t sure what to do for July.  I didn’t really want to start anything new since I need to work on rewrites for my first Sunset Canyon story.  I was rolling around different ideas when I suddenly had a great idea, well, I think it’s a great idea.  A novella would be a great way to introduce additional characters and kick off the series.

So far, I’ve gotten about half of it written.  I sprained my wrist in mid July slipping on wet grass during a thunderstorm.  It was very funny at the time and I didn’t even realize I’d injured myself until later that night.  I was in an immobilizing type of wrist brace that made typing somewhat difficult.  I’ve got a lot of handwritten notes to work off of, thankfully I injured my left wrist, at least my right hand was working otherwise handwriting wouldn’t have been an option.

So, that’s what I’ll be working on this week, organizing my handwritten notes and getting more writing done.  What’s going on with you this week?

Have a good week!
